RNs and PCTs Candidate Resources

Welcome to the Fresenius Kidney Care application process! We are excited to tell you more about what a career with us actually looks like. We created this page to help you understand the importance of the role you are applying for with us and to give you a solid idea of what your first year with us will look like.

What is it like to be a new employee? (Days 1-90)

At Fresenius Medical Care North America we want you to feel prepared to do your job well.  We provide new Registered Nurses (RNs) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) with enhanced new employee training for the first 12 weeks of employment called PREP (Progressive Renal Education Program) *.

In the first 90 days you can expect the following:

  • Attend classroom, virtual, and clinical training (daily hours will vary depending on the type of training)
  • Learn about FMCNA and our culture
  • Observe and practice hands-on skills: Infection control, Pre-treatment procedures, Vascular access, Machine set-up, Lab draws, Documentation, Medical administration, Treatment termination
  • New employees must successfully complete all graduation requirements including:
    • Attend all classroom training
    • Complete all assignments, documentation, and clinical training hours
    • Passfinalexam and skills validation

Here is an example schedule:

Week 1

  • Monday and Wednesday: Thrive On Training
  • Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday: Clinic 

Week 2 

  • Tuesday and Wednesday: Dialysis Machine Training
  • Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday: Clinic

    *some variability to occur in training length, content, etc.

    We do this to prepare you well for the next stage of your career with us. Once your training is complete, you can expect there to be a change in your schedule and tasks.

    What does the first year look like (days 91-365)?

    Once you get to day 91 with us, you will have completed your new employee training and will shift to your regular schedule. Depending on the role, you can expect one of the following paths.

    Registered Nurses

    • Graduate apprenticeship
    • Adjust daily schedule to follow clinic hours (may vary from 4 AM through clinic close)
    • Work in direct patient care
    • Additional training: anemia management, fluid management, plan of care, medication reviews, vaccinations, etc.

    Patient Care Technicians  

    • Adjust daily schedule to follow clinic hours (may vary from 4 AM through clinic close)
    • Begin working independently caring for 4 patients with minimal oversight from the preceptor
    • Additional training: water room, opening, closing, disinfecting, labs (preparing and packaging), advanced access management
    • Prepare to take national certification exam prior to 18 months of employment
