Pursing Excellence In Every Field

Meet Sean: Manager, Business Analysis at Fresenius Medical Care

Tell us about yourself.

FMCNA Business Analyst Sean

My name is Sean, and I’ve worked in the Business Analysis department of FMS Finance for a year and a half. I’m originally from Texas, but I moved to Boston in March of 2014 for a new adventure. Since my wife and I are transplants to New England, we like to explore the area as much as possible during our free time. I’m particularly fond of Maine for its rocky coast and dense forests, and Vermont for its mountains and laidback vibe. International travel has always been a top priority for us, too—our next stop is Tanzania, where we’ll spend two weeks on a safari in the Serengeti. When I’m not traveling, I enjoy watching college football (gig ‘em, Aggies!), trying new restaurants, and sampling craft brews.

What is a typical workday like for you?

I commute out to Waltham every morning from my apartment in Boston. To help the drive pass by faster, I listen to podcasts. A few of my favorites are The Nerdist, Good Job Brain, and Stuff You Should Know. Once I get to the office, I typically sit down with a cup of tea and make a list of items I want to work on during the day. The nice thing about my job is that no day is ever the same—my objectives really depend on the hot issues that come up from moment to moment. It’s very dynamic and fast paced, and I enjoy the challenge of responding to unexpected needs.

When I take time to step back and consider the impact of my work, it makes my job feel very rewarding.

Why did you choose to work in finance in the healthcare industry?

Data-driven financial professionals are very in demand, especially in the ever-changing healthcare industry. This creates a huge opportunity for individuals who can make sense of large data sets. It’s great for entry-level employees, but also allows for larger teams to be created and for employees to advance quickly in their careers. Finance touches every aspect of the business, so it provides an avenue to truly learn a business and partner with leaders to drive it forward. I work primarily with spreadsheets every day, and it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that what we’re really doing is servicing people who have a chronic disease.

Why did you decide to work at Fresenius Medical Care?

My interest in applying with Fresenius started after learning about the impact that Fresenius has on so many people’s lives with Chronic Kidney Disease through their medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and services. I thought it was a very unique company within the healthcare industry due to its vertical integration and broad-reaching capabilities. Upon further research, I learned about things like being on many lists for “Most Innovative Companies” and “Americas Best Employers.” During the interview process, I learned about all of the financial models along with the analytical support the finance team does to support the business and knew I had found the right match in company and position.

What is the environment like in your office?

The Finance department at Fresenius Medical Care is by far the best team I’ve ever been on. The team works together very well, we all share similar interests, and we know how to have a good time both during office hours and after work.

It's a very collaborative atmosphere - we're able to bounce ideas off of each other and have weekly roundtable discussions to share the hot projects that we're working on.

The Business Analysis group touches almost every aspect of the organization, and through these discussions, all team members are able to stay up-to-date on what’s going on in every segment of the company.

Tell us about an exciting project you’ve worked on.

I have been fortunate to be heavily involved in one of the largest opportunities for Fresenius Medical Care in recent years. The ESA Glidepath project will result in more stable patient outcomes, more efficient operations in our direct patient care, and a significant financial savings on our most expensive pharmaceutical. I have been involved in the project from the inception and provided key analysis and strategy support to the executive sponsors. We are experiencing tremendous success thus far and look forward to future opportunities on the horizon in anemia management.

Where do you want your career to take you?

I am currently pursuing an MBA with a concentration in Business Analytics at Bentley University just down the road from the Waltham office. After I graduate in 2017, I hope to get further involved in statistical modeling and data analysis so I can better understand business trends and driving forces behind them. As far as I’m concerned, the sky’s the limit in the Finance field!
