Chad Humphrey's Military Story

Q: Briefly describe your military service.

A: My first job was in Germany where we trained for a year to get ready for a deployment to Afghanistan. While I served for over six years, being an infantry platoon leader was my most memorable experience. It was easy to build strong relationships because we went through challenging experiences together: 100-mile ruck march, consecutive days of no sleep, night patrols in the dead of German winter, and the loss of friends.

Q: What does it mean to bring your military experience to FMCNA?

A: I showed up to Fresenius Health Partners with having limited experience with the role for which I was hired, and that wasn’t very different from my Army experience. Junior military officers change jobs around once a year and are constantly learning how to do the specifics of a new role. My first supervisor gave me a goal, shared why it mattered, and then let me figure out how to achieve it.

Q: How do you see FMCNA leveraging your experience, how do you see your experience propelling your success?

A: I think the military is exceptional at training leaders. While soldiers are trained to be laser-focused on the mission, there’s something called Commander’s Intent. This is the purpose of the mission and explains the why behind what we’re doing. One of my goals is for people to know the why behind everything they do. I think this is critical because people are smart and if they know the why they can use their judgment when the situation inevitably changes.

Q: How is FMCNA committed to supporting veterans?

A: Fresenius Medical Care North America recognizes the value veterans can offer to an organization: hard-working, dependable, leadership, willingness to take on the difficult tasks, and so much more. We’re taking deliberate efforts to recruit veterans and we have a Veteran Employee Resource Group where veterans can voice priorities, share resources, and build relationships.

Q: Why did you join the FMCNA team?

A: After leaving the Army, I worked at a healthcare start-up company that was trying to build a sustainable model to save lives in underdeveloped countries. Seeing the joy on someone’s face when they find out their loved one was going to live after a successful kidney transplant is inspiring. When I found out about a new team being built at Fresenius Medical North America, I jumped at the opportunity to help build something that’s focused on finding creative ways to keep people healthy.

Q: How do you feel that your role is a “vital part” in supporting our patients and our company?

A: The teams that interact directly with patients and partners are the face of the organization and the impressions they leave are meaningful. The support teams help make the experience what it is: providing feedback, making sure patients aren’t waiting to speak with someone, having an outstanding transportation network that can quickly help with last-minute issues, and ensuring patients get their mail.

Q: Describe an experience or feeling that stands out when thinking of your career with FMCNA.

A: Helping figure out how to best support COVID positive patients with transportation challenges took a lot of effort and collaboration. And I say that as though we have it figured out. We’re constantly learning and making adjustments. During this effort, I met so many people in Fresenius Medical North America that I never had the opportunity to meet and work with, and everyone was completely focused on helping patients. It reminded me of being in the Army where you would move to a new team in another state, but everyone still had the same commitment. It makes it easier to tackle tough ventures when you share the load with people you respect and appreciate.

Q: Do you feel you or your team/department leads, innovates, succeeds? If so, how?

A: My teams are strongly encouraged to find new ways of achieving the desired outcome. We’re constantly asking ourselves how can we make this better, faster, or more efficient? On the other side of that coin, we’re also asking if we should still be doing this, and does it add sufficient value? We’ve been using technology to automate routine processes, and that lets the team spend more time thinking and exploring other opportunities.
