Meet Tony

Tyrone "Tony" Gibbs is a Registered Nurse, Home Therapy Program Manager with Fresenius Kidney Care and has been with the company since May of 2004. Before joining the Fresenius Kidney Care team, he was in the United States Army for 5 active years and 13 years in the United States Reserves.

LET’S HEAR WHAT TONY HAD TO SAY:

Q: Please describe your military service

A: I love and cherish my time as a Soldier. I traveled the world, met the best people, and gained valuable life experiences that only the military could provide. As a “Combat Medic,” I enjoyed working with and learning from Air Force Interpreters, Marines, Navy Corpsmen and SEABEES, Army SF, Rangers, Sappers, Infantry, Artillery, Tankers, and my Scouts. My Dad was right: I met my best friends in the ARMY.

Q: What does it mean to bring your military experience to FMCNA?

A: I’m fortunate to work in a time and place surrounded by Americans that love service members! Unlike my father and his fellow Vietnam Veterans, I can hold my head up at work and proudly display my pride as a Soldier. Even when I don’t “advertise” my military background, I think it shows in how I conduct myself, and I’m thankful that this has not pushed others away. My coworkers make me feel loved and protected. They’ve thanked me for my service, but I thank them for all they do every day!

Q: How do you see FMCNA leveraging your experience? How do you see your experience propelling your success?

A: I was a Non-Commissioned Officer for most of my time in the military, serving as a Platoon Sergeant. That prepared me for all of my civilian leadership roles, including my present job as a Program Manager. I learned from the best leaders, and I’ve tried to model myself after them.

Q: How is FMCNA committed to supporting veterans?

A: I feel nothing but supported by this company! Fresenius Kidney Care's Core Values reflect the core values of the Army, so that’s a familiar feel. Plus, I’m surrounded by like-minded individuals, many of them veterans that feel our Mission comes first.

Q: How do you feel that your role is a “vital part” in supporting our patients and our company?

A: At the end of my workday, I KNOW that I’ve made a positive difference in someone’s life, 99.9% of the time! I am a member of an outstanding team that helps patients gain more control, achieve tangible goals, and live better lives. I constantly hear the praises for my co-workers from our patients, their family members, and their friends, so I know I made the right choice joining this incredible Family!

Q: Describe an experience or feeling that stands out when thinking of your career with FMCNA.

A: There are literally hundreds of stories I could tell about my time with Fresenius Kidney Care, but the one that truly shines for me is FMCNA’s Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief. The company responded like a military division, rapidly deploying assets and personnel, performing supply drops of food, water, and home dialysis supplies, and rescuing patients and staff from the floodwaters, my family included. As a Soldier, I provided disaster relief in other countries, but I never imagined I would need that same type of help here in the States. Fresenius Kidney Care came to my family’s rescue, using a military high-water rescue vehicle, crewed by civilians from out-of-state, a co-worker’s spouse, and one of my co-workers! After getting my family to safety, I was allowed to join this team in their mission of mercy. Riding on the back of that vehicle, helping others in need, seeing the faces of people who gave us “the look” made me feel like I was in uniform! I will never forget what this company gave me on that special day.

Q: Do you feel that your role allows you to be a partner in caring? If so, how?

A: I am truly grateful for the opportunity to lead that my superiors granted me. Their confidence in my abilities is something I strive to never betray in my role as a partner in caring. They have given me an awesome charge to be a resource and mentor to other healthcare professionals within our department. Houston is a huge area, filled with people from all walks of life and different experiences. I try to be the kind of role-model I would want to follow and I pray that my ego and pride allow me to be receptive to ideas from others, as we try to meet the challenges to care for our patients and be good stewards for this company.
