Meet Jessica
Jessica Smith is a Regional Vice President and decided to join the Fresenius Medical Care North America team when she was looking for a company that allowed her to feel like she was part of something bigger than herself. She considers herself to be a serving leader and finds joy not only in the work she does but by serving those who report to her as well. Read on to learn more about Jessica.
LET’S HEAR WHAT JESSICA HAD TO SAY:
Q: Why did you join the FMCNA team?
A: I joined FMC to continue working in a field that I loved and to be a part of a company that I felt truly cared about the patients and staff as I did.
Q: How do you feel your role is a “vital part” in supporting our patients and our company?
A: As a serving leader, it’s important to ensure that I am striving to support my team and cultivate a “family-oriented” culture for our staff and patients.
Q: Describe an experience or feeling that stands out when thinking of your career with FMCNA.
A: Having come from Alabama, where hurricanes and tornados were our norm, it has simply amazed me how FMCNA, as a company from our first line teams to our corporate leadership, has shown up in every disaster. Shown up in means of providing additional staff, technical support, gas for staff, generators where needed, daily necessities for our patients and staff, and even delivered a mobile home in an instance where a staff member's home was destroyed in a tornado. All within 24 to 48 hours of the disaster occurring. There are so many instances where FMCNA has shown up, but this, in particular, hits home for me.
Q: Do you feel that you have a powerful effect in your role?
A: I do. I am in a unique position to be able to coach and motivate others to success and fulfillment.
Q: Have you experienced professional growth with personal meaning in your role?
A: Yes, the development opportunities here at FMC help develop you into a better manager and a better leader. I’ve grown in ways that I would not have imagined. My ability to think outside of the box and truly challenge individuals to be their best selves has been beyond fulfilling for me.
Q: Do you feel you or your team/department leads, innovates, succeeds?
A: Absolutely! I think the best example of this was with COVID-19. I watched the Northeast Team lead through a pandemic with poise, commitment, and diligence. The team leads with confidence with emotional staff and partners. Fresenius Medical Care North America not only did what was best and took great care of both patients and staff, but we were a leader in the healthcare industry. Not just in the dialysis industry, but in healthcare as a whole. We conducted triage calls daily to respond to quarantine shifts needed, emergency transportation, staffing assistance, and protective equipment shortages. Other dialysis companies were depending on FMC to help dialyze their patients in many markets.
Q: Do you feel that your role allows you to be a partner in caring?
A: Absolutely! I truly feel decisions are made based on what’s best for our patients and staff. I am given the autonomy to make decisions needed and/or have the conversations needed for effective change. The executive team has all committed to Servant Leadership, and not only does it show, but staff can feel it.
