Meet Marilyn

Marilyn Thomas is a Registered Nurse who stated her career at Fresenius Medical Care North America at the end 2019. Although starting her career during a pandemic, Marilyn stayed strong and positive and found ways to always look forward and grow. 

LET’S HEAR WHAT AMANDA HAD TO SAY:

Q: Tell your story:

A: Since I was little, I always wanted to help people. As the years went on, I decided to become a nurse. I gradated from high school and went straight to nursing school. I must say nursing school was very challenging, but I never gave up. I eventually graduated in December 2019 and got the best opportunity of my life which was to be one of the first to get accepted in the new Fresenius Pre-Licensed Nursing position.

Q: Describe your training experience:

A: My training experience was excellent! At first, I was scared and did not know what to expect, but with the educators and my preceptors, my fears went away. Both the educators and my preceptors were astounding. They answered every question I asked and taught me every skill I needed to know when working in dialysis with no hesitation. They were very patient and compassionate with me. I am truly thankful for them and their time.

Q: Describe your professional experience with Fresenius so far:

A: My professional experience with Fresenius Medical Care North America has been good. I can tell they care about their employees as much as they care about their patients. They put their patients first and make sure they provide outstanding care.

Q: One month into starting a new job as a nurse, COVID peaked. Describe your experience working as a new nurse during the COVID-19 Pandemic:

A: Working as a new nurse during the COVID-19 Pandemic had me questioning if I chose the right profession. At first, I thought I finished nursing school at the wrong time, but I never gave up. It was overwhelming in the beginning as a new nurse during the peak of the pandemic. I was trying to get the hang of everything and then things kept changing in dialysis every day to ensure patients and staff safe. By the end, I am glad I kept going because at the end of the dark tunnel there was light. I have finally found my light in dialysis and love it!

Q: What did Fresenius do differently during the COVID that surprised you:

A: Fresenius made sure to stayed up to date with COVID guidelines. They updated the guidelines every time there was a new update. Fresenius Medical Care North America made sure staff screened patients before allowing them to be on the treatment floor. Staff was screened as well before they started work for the day. Fresenius stayed on top of making sure patients and staff were safe during COVID.

Q: What advice would you give a new grad considering a position in dialysis:

A: I would tell them to go for it! It may be a little challenging in the beginning, but I promise it will get easier. Dialysis is very rewarding! You will see the difference from when a patient first started to where they are now. To me, this is my favorite part about working in dialysis.
