LET’S HEAR WHAT SAMANTHA HAD TO SAY:

Q: Why did you join the FMCNA team?

A: I joined the Fresenius Kidney Care team as a staff nurse to be able to provide more one on one care for patients and effect positive change in an outpatient setting; I quickly began to love the role and find a passion for dialysis nursing.

Q: How do you feel that your role is a “vital part” in supporting our patients and our company?

A: As a Clinical Educator, I work closely with the direct patient care staff and management teams to ensure excellent care of our patients by providing training, coaching, and developmental support.

A team that is up to date on the latest technologies and company policies and procedures can support our patients by ensuring patient safety and improving the quality of life of every patient we care for. I feel that my role is vital in helping our staff be confident in their skills to deliver on our patient promise: to provide the highest quality care.

Q: Describe an experience or feeling that stands out when thinking of your career with FMCNA.

A: Throughout my career with Fresenius Kidney Care, several stories or instances stand out, but all have the same common theme of why I do what I do: love for the profession and our patients.

As a floor nurse, my calling for dialysis became evident about two years into my role. I had been providing patient care day in and day out, just doing routine daily tasks in the clinic. I ran into a patient’s family member who stopped me and thanked me profusely for taking such good care of his Mom. He told me that she had always told him how she never worried when she knew I would be there taking care of her and that I was still so nice and caring and took time out of my day to always check on her. That had a profound effect on me as a nurse.

Since that day, I have always strived to not only follow our policies and procedures to provide safe and effective care for our patients but always do “a little extra” and remember the reason we are all here: to truly improve the quality of life for patients and help them THRIVE on dialysis.

As a Clinical Educator, I have an even greater reach by supporting multiple clinics where I can help motivate and instill these same values in the direct patient care staff through education, various Fresenius Kidney Care programs such as Leading with Values and the Patient Experience drivers and developing meaningful relationships with open communication.

Q: Do you feel that you have a powerful effect on your role? If so, how?

A: I feel that I do have a powerful effect on my role as a Clinical Educator. I can utilize our Fresenius Kidney Care training programs and tools and assist people with little to no knowledge of dialysis or nephrology to become competent and confident employees that foster a culture of patient safety and provide excellent care for our patients.

Q: Have you experienced professional growth with personal meaning in your role? If so, how?

A: I have experienced significant professional growth with my role as a Clinical Educator. This position has allowed me to obtain my Certified Nephrology Nursing certification that has significantly broadened my knowledge of nephrology. I have also been able to expand my professional skills, including Virtual Learning facilitation, various computer programs and skills, and learning and implementing new and innovative technologies in the world of dialysis.

I love learning and expanding my skills for a subject I am passionate about so that we, as a team, can genuinely improve the quality of life of every patient every day. I feel that any professional growth has helped me to become a better, more well-rounded nephrology nurse and Clinical Educator.

Q: Do you feel you or your team/department leads, innovates, succeeds? If so, how?

A: I feel that the Fresenius Kidney Care Education team really “leads the way” in the areas of leadership, innovation, and success. As a Clinical Educator, I am frequently part of groups and committees that develop new and innovative ways to bring training and education to our clinic staff that keeps them informed and engaged and is focused on the clinical and personal success of our team members.

I can educate and support staff to grow and become confident and competent in their positions and foster growth in areas of knowledge and leadership, which in turn helps the individual, our patients, our clinics, and our company as a whole succeed.

Q: Do you feel that your role allows you to be a partner in caring? If so, how?

A: The Clinical Educator role not only allows me to be a partner in caring personally but also allows me to help others on the team become partners in caring as well. I can educate and encourage clinic staff to embody the patient experience drivers of empathy, compassion, respect, and care coordination.

The best way to lead is, by example. I genuinely do have a passion for our patients, our company, and what we stand for, and I believe Fresenius Kidney Care has equipped me with the resources and knowledge to put this into action and help encourage others to do so as well.
