Meet Yash

Yash Deshpande began working for Fresenius Medical Care in October 2020 as a Machine Learning Engineer on our Digital Technology and Innovation team. Yash is an important part of the IT team and he is enthusiastic about his role. Learn more about Yash's role below.

LET’S HEAR WHAT YASH HAD TO SAY:

Q: Why did you join the FMCNA team?

A: FMCNA has an expanding body of work in data science and machine learning and makes use of these capabilities to enhance patient care. I found the company to be an environment in which I could make an impact on my work, as well as broaden my knowledge base.

Q: What was your experience like beginning a new career during a pandemic?

A: The process was quite seamless, thanks to Pete (who is now my manager!). I interviewed virtually with almost everybody on the larger Data & Analytics team. I was mid-stage in my career and fresh out of grad school, so the “change” was welcome; it gives me the opportunity to apply and hone my skills in a real-world setting. Thanks to everybody on my team, the onboarding process was relaxed and went smoothly, allowing me to connect with colleagues effortlessly and begin working.

Q: The pandemic has required us to adjust our daily routine.  How are you adjusting to staying safe? Is there anything you are doing to help maintain both safety and/or connection during this time?

A: I go out very little, only for perishables if at all. I make sure to practice social distancing, wear a mask, and wash my hands – the bare minimum. I’ve been lucky enough to be in a position where I’m able to keep myself safe.

Q: What would you tell someone hesitant about starting a new career during this pandemic?

A: I would say don’t worry about it at all! Working on-premises in a new office – getting used to the office layout, settling into your workspace, and building a professional relationship with your colleagues – can be daunting. Starting virtually gives you the freedom to work from the comfort of your home, and by the time you start working on-premises again, you’ve cemented your position within your team.

Q: How do you feel that your role is a "vital part" in supporting our patients and our company?

A: With an increasing focus on data-driven patient care, it’s important to have a data and analytics capability that’s robust. As just one cog in this wheel, my role helps machine learning models operationalize and scale to business needs.

Q: Do you feel that you have a powerful effect in your role? If so, how?

A: I’ve come into a role that is relatively new at FMCNA, and I have the opportunity to build out a robust in-house ML operations capability at FMCNA going forward.

Q: Do you feel that your role allows you to be a partner in caring? If so, how?

A: Yes! The results of machine learning models created by data scientists directly impact patient care. My role allows me to operationalize this process and monitor these models.

Q: Describe an experience or feeling that stands out when thinking of your career with FMCNA?

A: While my major was electrical engineering, I chose to pivot and work with data as I felt I could enjoy the work I was doing, have a meaningful impact across domains, and grow my skill set. Grad school afforded me the opportunity to study statistical machine learning and natural language processing, and I wanted to find a role that allowed me to apply what I’d learned to a domain that helps people as opposed to exploits them; FMCNA, in my belief, aligns itself with these values.
