Meet Britney

Britney Johnson is a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) who is not only good at what she does but chose her career for personal reasons as well. Coming from a family who has personally experienced the hardships that come with kidney failure, Britney chose to work with FMCNA since she has seen first hand how much this organization cares about its patients. Learn more about Britney and what led her to a career at Fresenius Kidney Care.

LET’S HEAR WHAT LANCE HAD TO SAY:

Q: Why did you join the FMCNA team?

A: Before joining Fresenius Medical Care, I was a biomedical research scientist, and the career placed me at the interfaces between viral infections, genetic diseases, and hosts. My studies aimed to fill gaps in our understanding of how these challenges lead to chronic illness and clinical manifestations, such as kidney failure. I joined FMCNA longing for an opportunity to use my background to positively impact healthcare professionals and the treatment of all patients, including those in marginalized, underrepresented communities.

Q: How do you feel that your role is a “vital part” in supporting our patients and our company?

A: My role as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) addresses the gaps between clinical research, drug/device development, and actual clinical practice. Within my role, I keep a finger on the pulse of scientific advancements and innovations in nephrology, while addressing the scientific questions and needs of health care professionals responsible for the care of our patients.

Q: Describe an experience or feeling that stands out when thinking of your career with FMCNA

A: I serve FMCNA as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) because FMCNA serves the disadvantaged! African Americans are most likely to face kidney failure and constitute more than 35% of the dialysis population. Unfortunately, my family and friends have been impacted by kidney disease due to diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. When my aunt began dialysis, fear of the unknown was paralyzing. She was anxious, emotionally vulnerable, and overwhelmed by the required lifestyle changes. However, the FMCNA care team reassured her that she could enjoy life with dialysis. The team empathized with her as a mother, a sister, the reigning family chef, and a pillar of her community. They provided resources, modality education, and treatment goals while acknowledging the importance of belief systems, family structures, and cultural differences that impact lifestyles, adherence to medical advice, and responses to treatment. This holistic approach has been the key to her success in dialysis. Today, the interdisciplinary team is my aunt’s “clinic family”, and I am honored to support her extended family as their FMCNA MSL.

Q: Do you feel you or your team/department leads, innovates, succeeds?

A: Yes, the MSL team identifies key opinion leaders across the nation and build fruitful relationships by providing scientific support, networking opportunities, and facilitating collaborations for advancements inpatient care.
