Meet Ginger
Ginger Sims is an Inpatient Services Program Manager with FMCNA. She got started in dialysis just from being in the right place at the right time and has been enjoying her career path with FMCNA ever since. Learn more about how Ginger went from working as a CNA in a nursing home to a lifelong fulfilling career with FMCNA.
LET'S HEAR WHAT GINGER HAD TO SAY:
Q: Why did you join the FMCNA team?
A: Working as a CNA at a nursing home, I was assigned to take my patient across the alley to the dialysis clinic. I had no idea what dialysis was or how it worked. I walked in and was amazed. It was machine after machine running blood through these tubes. I asked the nurse “what is this?” She said dialysis. Do Do you need a job? She took me in, 18 years old, right out of high school and taught me everything I needed to know to be a dialysis technician. She is still with FMC and continues to be a role model.
Q: How do you feel that your role is a “vital part” in supporting our patients and our company?
A: My role with Inpatient Services is a vital part of treating the patient at all times. When they enter the hospital, they have the comfort of knowing they are being treated by knowledgeable staff that represent FKC core values and service. We see these patients at their most venerable times. They are sick and not feeling well or critically ill in need of emergent treatment. Our staff takes calls 24-hours a day to be available to our patients.
My team knows all modalities including HD, PD, CRRT, and Apheresis. The nurses work independently most of the time, so instilling the highest moral and ethical standards are my greatest priority. Each and every patient receives the quality care they deserve so they can return to their home therapies or outpatient setting. We are also the face of FMCNA with new patients. Our nurses transition the patient from the hospital setting to outpatient; educating, supporting the patient, and families during an emotional time. They guide them through what could be a difficult time in their lives.
Q: Describe an experience or feeling that stands out when thinking of your career with FMCNA.
A: This company has encouraged growth from the very start as a dialysis technician, giving me the support and knowledge to succeed. I was given the opportunity to learn water treatment, inventory tech, and become a secretary of my local clinic before deciding to go to school to become a registered nurse.
FMCNA worked with my school schedule and supported me. After graduation, I was offered a staff nursing position at the clinic. Being right of out school, I had the desire to see the hospital setting but still wanted to stay with FKC. I transferred to the Acute setting and learned how to take care of hospitalized dialysis patients.
I realized that this was my calling. Seeing a patient at the brink of death and being able to make them better was incredible. I worked my way up to Program Manager I then Program Manager II. With 10 hospitals and many nurses on my team.
My team has developed into one of the best in the company. Working together and collaborating to make sure every patient at every hospital received treatment in a timely manner. I plan on continuing to grow professionally within the company and know that I will have the support and encouragement of my upper management along the way.
